Asbestos is the name given to a number of naturally occurring, fibrous silicate minerals mined for their useful properties such as thermal insulation, chemical and thermal stability, and high tensile strength. A number of building materials still in use today contain asbestos. Asbestos is commonly used as an acoustic insulator, thermal insulation, fire proofing and in other building materials.

 

AHERA stands for Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA (40 CFR Part 763)), a provision of the Toxic Substances Control Act, was passed by Congress in 1986, requiring local educational agencies to inspect their schools for asbestos-containing building material and prepare management plans that make recommendations for the reduction of asbestos hazards.

 

NESHAP stands for National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP (40CFR Part 61, SubPart M). Pursuant to the Clean Air Act (CAA) of 1970, EPA established the Asbestos National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) It is intended to minimize the release of asbestos fibers during activities involving the handling of asbestos. It specifies work practices to be followed during renovation, demolition or other abatement activities when friable asbestos is involved.

 

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) - 1910.1001 applies to all occupational exposures to asbestos in all industries covered by the Occupational Safety and Health Act. (except for construction work as defined in 29 CFR 1910.12(b). Exposure to asbestos in construction work is covered by 29 CFR 1926.1101).
